Even the smallest amount of dehydration before surgery can have an impact on your body’s ability to go under (and wake up from) anesthesia in the strongest state possible.

The vast majority are already anxious (and probably overwhelmed) and since none have drunk any fluids after midnight the day before surgery their cells are dehydrated, and may not be aware that their bodies aren't exactly in an ideal state to take on the stress of a surgery or procedure.

Q: Why do some people have to endure multiple IV sticks before surgery?

A: Dehydration leads to reduced blood flow which means your nurse may have difficulty finding a vein that works well for IV insertion.

Q: Why do some people experience post-op nausea and vomiting?

A: Think about it this way. You're body has had nothing to eat or drink for probably 12 hours or even more. This dehydrated body then gets anesthesia and strong medicine thrown into it on an empty stomach while sleeping.

Did you know that according to a PubMed.gov medical study, “Preoperative dehydration is associated with increased rates of postoperative ARF, MI, and cardiac arrest.”
